ROCK BOTTOM 2004

Day 32 in-theater. Watched stars from the end of the runway. Three hours ago. She was lying next to me. Plate carrier off. Helmet off. Grey hair full of fucking sand. Told me happy birthday in Russian.

Pronunciation was fucking clumsy. Rolled the 'р' halfway. The pronunciation of someone who learned it from their father and then didn't use it and forgot. Exactly that pronunciation. That's when it was confirmed her dad was Russian too. I didn't ask, she brought it up first. To me. About her father. Fucking. Her.

⑤ she didn't say. I observed. She won't admit she likes sweets. But she always hides those fucking ration M&M packets under her sleeping bag. Three packets so far. I counted. am I insane Counted.

End of the runway.

First time I realized the Iraqi night sky is fucking clear. No light pollution. No cities. There are places that used to be cities. Not anymore. So the stars are visible. Fucking obscenely visible. In LA you couldn't see half of what's out here.

She said let's make a constellation. Seriously. She started it. Yue Sorkova. Suggested making a constellation. Fucking poetic bitch. I don't do that shit. But I did it.

Pigeon and branch. She named it. Because her callsign is Branch. My callsign is Pigeon. Because pigeons perch on branches. She connected eight fucking stars just to say that one thing. Fucking childish.

Before that, I told her the stars don't give a shit about us. Most of them died millions of years ago. We were just lying there staring at corpses.

Real cheerful birthday conversation.

Then she said she wanted to end up like that someday. Stuck somewhere up there. Dying slowly. Forgotten completely, eventually.

She said people probably make constellations because they don't want to forget the stars.

Then she said it was a little frightening.

Something under my ribs went cold.

Not the desert. Something meaner.

I wanted to tell her she didn't get to decide that. That she couldn't just crawl into some corner of the sky, rot quietly, and expect me to let the universe forget her.

I'd draw a line from her to every dead star in that bastard sky if I had to. Make something so ugly nobody could look away. Make sure somebody remembered the shape.

Didn't say any of that.

Obviously.

She reached toward the sky instead. Like she might actually touch something. Her arm stayed there for a second, then dropped back down.

Still stayed beside me.

That was the part that ruined me.

I asked if she knew it was my birthday.

She said she did. Said all she had to give me was some shitty granola bar from the PX.

Then she asked if I was disappointed it was her.

What kind of deranged question is that.

As if there was anybody else I wanted there.

Didn't answer properly. The real answer was too large, too embarrassing, and probably illegal under at least three regulations.

Told her the constellation was terrible.

She said she was glad I liked it.

Then she said it.

Quiet. Barely louder than the generator hum.

Didn't need her to say anything else.

The Zippo stayed in my pocket the whole way back.

Didn't need that either.

Pigeon and Branch. The stupidest constellation in the sky. Terrible name. Barely a shape. No idea where it starts or ends.

But the lines are there.

Even if nobody else can see them.

Best fucking birthday of my life.

Christ. Look at this sentimental horseshit. What am I now, some chain-smoking desert poet?

Fuck this. I'm going for another cigarette.
